7:15am Matt had been brave and spent the night in the 'haunted' house. He had had no nightmares, just a small chill. But that is to be expected when you sleep with all the windows open on a cold night. He trudged groggily into the lab, to the amazement of all the team members. No one had expected him to be up this early, because he had been up most of the night. He sat down at the conference room table beside Anton. They ate their breakfast in silence, neither of them wanting to talk about anything at the time. The phone on table in front of them rang. Anton was first to swallow and pick up the phone. "Anton Hendricks," he answered the ring. "Hey Anton," came Peter's soft and choked yet familiar voice. "Hi Peter. Still got the infection in your throat?" the physician asked. "Yeah, but I had to call." "Want me to pass you to Matt?" "Sure. Thanks." "Hey Pete. Want me to come pick you up?" the Case Manager asked. "Yeah. Is Lindsay there?" he had to tell her something. "What, you don't want to talk with your good ol' boss?" "I really need to talk to her." "Yeah, she's around somewhere," Matt rose to find her. He looked all over the Mobile Lab, but couldn't find her. He decided to try the house. "Lindsay!" he called, trying to get her attention if she was in the house. "I'm in the study," she called back. Matt ascended the steps to give her the phone. He found her in the study, where she had said she was. He handed her the phone, telling her, "it's Pete." "Thanks," she thanked him. Matt left the room to give her privacy. "Peter?" Lindsay spoke into the receiver. "Hi Linds," his voice was so scratchy she could hardly recognize it. "Hi! You feeling any better?" "Just a bit... I just wanted to tell you something." "Sure." "Thank you." "You're welcome. Uh, what are you thanking me for?" "For being a good friend." Peter sneezed loudly on the other end of the line. "Gesundheit." "Thanks." "I know you would do the same if that happened to me." "What, excuse you if you sneezed?" Peter joked. "Smartass. You know what I mean." "Yeah. So I guess I'll be seeing you soon?" "Yeah, but I won't be coming to get you at the hospital. I have a lot to do here." "I understand. See you soon." "Bye." Lindsay hung up the phone and put it in the pocket of her jeans. |
